Every year, at least 100,000 children are forced into prostitution in the United States, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
Oregon is a state where significant sex trafficking takes place. And Portland, Oregon is a national hub for child sex trafficking. According to ABC News, children and teens from all over the country, but mostly from the small towns of the Northwest, walk Portland’s streets today.
The word “trafficking” implies moving human sex slaves around from city to city, venue to venue. However, many kids or teens are now trafficked in their own cities and threatened not to tell anyone. A large number of children who are exploited are our own children.
Most Americans, even if they acknowledge this crime happens in the USA, assume the victims are foreigners smuggled into the country. This is simply not true. Most of the victims of domestic minor sex trafficking are American kids who are throw-aways, or runaways from home voluntarily, or are targeted by pimps. One-third of all runaway teens are approached within 48 hours by a pimp or trafficker.
